Johnny Cash on Fine Tuning

Don't miss Fine Tuning this Sunday, as I'll be playing selections from the posthumous Johnny Cash release American V: A Hundred Highways, which features some of his final recordings.

The album is beyond poignant - a unbelievably intense and moving document that includes the last song he ever wrote, "Like The 309."

Fine Tuning is heard every Sunday from 4-6pm on Ann Arbor's 107one.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend, everybody!

Cool photo show in Windsor...

Had a chance to see an amazing exhibition of photos at the Art Gallery of Windsor yesterday. They were all taken by a guy named Barry Wentzel, who was the primary photographer for British music magazine Melody Maker from 1965 - 1975. I highly recommend taking the trip to Windsor to see the show, which is up until mid-July. Included are stunning images of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, the Rolling Stones and many others. And if you've got the $$$, you can actually buy some of the hand-signed prints!

Television

I made a mad dash to Toronto last weekend to see a rare live performance by the legendary punk band from New York, Television, who were playing as part of the NXNE Festival.
All four original members were on stage at the Phoenix Concert Theatre - Tom Verlaine (guitar, vocals), Richard Lloyd (guitar), Billy Ficca (drums) and Fred Smith (bass). They played sensational versions of many of their best known songs, such as Marquee Moon, See No Evil and Venus, included a few new ones, then topped off the show with a searing version of Jimi Hendrix's I Don't Live Today.

I'd only seen the band play once before, and that was here in Ann Arbor at the Blind Pig back in 1992!

Album of the year (so far)

The best album I've heard so far this year is in stores today - I highly, highly recommend you pick up a copy of The Garden, by English soul-electronica band Zero 7 - you won't be sorry!

sunday, SUNDAY!!!

This Sunday I'll be handing out the hardware at this year's Dexter-Ann Arbor run. Running (in my case, make that fast walking!) is my primary form of exercise, so I'm really looking forward to handing out the awards to the winners...looks like the weather will be excellent as well.

Radio-wise, hope you can listen to my freeform show Fine Tuning this Sunday from 4-6pm, as I'll be playing more tunes from the Elivs Costello/Allen Toussaint collaboration "The River In Reverse," plus new material from Zero 7, the Ditty Bops, Bruce Cockburn and Donovan Frankenreiter.
