Fine Tuning preview: 8/28/22

This Sunday on Fine Tuning I'll be featuring "Heartmind," the exquisite new studio album from singer-songwriter Cass McCombs. In his review of the album for the Wall Street Journal, music critic Mark Richardson says that "Heartmind" is an arresting collection of songs that tackles pain and uncertainty with humor and grace. I couldn't agree more! Also in the mix on FT this Sunday will be a 73rd birthday tribute to Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers, plus a tribute to Jerry Allison, drummer for Buddy Holly's band the Crickets. Alison died on August 22nd at the age of 82. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor's 107one.

Fine Tuning preview: 8/21/22

I'm delighted to feature "Not About to Die," a collection of Wire's 1977-1978 studio demos, on Fine Tuning this weekend. Widely bootlegged decades ago but never officially released until now, "Not About to Die" shows the band slowly moving away from the punk rock sound of their incisive debut album "Pink Flag." It's a fascinating document from one of my favorite bands in the known universe. Also in the mix will be new songs from Cass McCombs, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Broken Bells, plus birthday tributes to John Lee Hooker and Elvis Costello. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor's 107one.

Fine Tuning preview: 8/14/22

This Sunday in the album spotlight on Fine Tuning I'll feature "Entering Heaven Alive," Jack White's second studio album of 2022. Filled with some of the best and most beautiful songs Jack has ever written, "Entering Heaven Alive" is truly one of the best albums I've heard so far this year. Also in the mix will be a tribute to Motown legend Lamont Dozier, who died on Aug. 8th at the age of 81. The team of Holland - Dozier - Holland wrote and produced dozens of smash hits for the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas, the Four Tops and many others. That plus tunes from Lord Huron in anticipation of their Aug. 16th concert at Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre, and birthday tributes to the late, great Isaac Hayes and Ginger Baker. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor's 107one.

Fine Tuning preview: 8/7/22

In the spotlight this Sunday on Fine Tuning will be "Bloodline Maintenance," the superb new solo album from singer-songwriter Ben Harper. Also in the mix will be lots of songs by the Temptations, in honor of the Detroit premiere of the Tony Award winning musical "Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations," opening next Tuesday at the Detroit Opera House. I'll also pay tribute to legendary music executive Mo Ostin, who died last Sunday at the age of 95. As chief executive of Warner Brother Records, Ostin signed countless top acts to the label, including the Kinks, Paul Simon, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, R.E.M., Rickie Lee Jones, Neil Young, etc., etc. All that plus a 73rd birthday tribute to Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits! Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor's 107one.
