Fine Tuning preview: 5/2/21

This Sunday on Fine Tuning I'll feature the 50th anniversary reissue of John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, the best post-Beatles solo album ever made. A cathartic, visceral, starkly beautiful collection of songs, John's first solo album after leaving the Fab Four is presented with a new mix that dusts off some of the old cobwebs, and features numerous never-before-heard outtakes. Also in the mix will be birthday tributes to James Brown, the Godfather of Soul; and Ian McCulloch, lead singer of Echo & the Bunnymen. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbors' 107one.

It's the Ella, Cole & Peter show on Fine Tuning this Sunday! I'll devote a large part of the program to the world's greatest jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald, who was born on April 25, 1917. I'll feature Ella's incomparable take on a bunch of Cole Porter classics, including I Get a Kick Out of You, I've Got You Under My Skin, and What Is This Thing Called Love. I'll also be featuring singer-songwriter Peter Case's fantastic new album "The Midnight Broadcast,' his first in about six years, plus I'll play an interview I did recently with Peter to discuss his new album. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor's 107one.

This Easter Sunday on Fine Tuning I'll feature "Breathe," the new album from the legendary jazz organist Dr. Lonnie Smith. Most of Lonnie's latest was recorded live in 2017 at the Jazz Standard club in New York City. The opening and closing tracks (covers of Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Togther" and Donovan's "Sunshine Superman") are recent studio recordings done with special guest Iggy Pop on vocals. Fine Tuning: Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. on ann arbor's 107one.
