Fine Tuning preview: 1/19/25

This Sunday on Fine Tuning I'll be featuring the music of Hugo Largo, a New York City-based quartet that was active from 1984 through 1991. Known for their unusual lineup of two bass guitars, violin and vocals, Hugo Largo earned high praise from the likes of Brian Eno and R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. All of the band's studio output and previously unreleased material are included on the recently released 2 CD set "Huge Large and Electric." Fine Tuning preview: 1/12/25

This Sunday on Fine Tuning I'll spend the first hour of the show playing tunes from top Krautrock bands Kraftwerk, Neu! and Can (pictured), including tracks from a previously unreleased live album that Can recorded in Keele, England back in 1977. Also in the mix will be a tribute to Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary (Peter died on Tuesday at the age of 86), plus new songs from The Weather Station, Bryan Ferry and Elbow. Fine Tuning preview: 1/5/25

This Sunday on the first Fine Tuning of 2025 I'll be devoting most of the show to a couple of truly iconic artists: David Bowie (1/8/47 - 1/10/16) and Scott Walker (1/9/43 - 3/22/19). Bowie once declared that Walker had been "his idol since [he] was a kid," while Walker thanked Bowie "for your generosity of spirit when it comes to other artists. This Sunday on Fine Tuning I'll pay tribute to some of the stellar musicians who passed away in 2024, including Quincy Jones, Wayne Kramer & Dennis Thompson of the MC5, Martin Phillips of the Chills, Duke Fakir of the Four Tops, Dickie Betts of the Allman Brothers, and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead. This Sunday on Fine Tuning I'll continue my holiday tradition of playing The Vince Guaraldi Trio's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" album in its entirety, and I'll also feature Christmas songs by everyone from Roberta Flack to the Ventures to Ella Fitzgerald to Roger Miller. Back in 2022 the indie-rock band White Denim put on a sensational performance at Sonic Lunch, and I'm delighted to feature their impressive new album "12" on Fine Tuning this Sunday.
